Foreword

Whilst Alchemy is not the preserve of any one of the Clans, it is nonetheless a respectable and honourable calling that can make a significant contribution towards our war effort. Be it turning out healing potions, which can save the lives of our warriors in the field, or potions that can strengthen the will of our mages and incantors allowing them to cast greater spells without resting or potions that spread illness among the troops of our foe; all of these and many other potions have a part to play in our battle for survival.

The recipes and instructions contained within this tome are for those who have mastered the arts of making basic healing salves and minor potions and are now ready to progress onto the next level of their studies and being introducing magical suspensions into their work.

Magical Suspension

Magical suspension forms the key ingredient of many of the potions detailed in this work.

Adding magical suspensions into a potion is a quick and easy way of increasing the power and potency of any brew. It could be considered as though one were making the potion “magical”.

Magical suspensions are liquids enchanted with the blessings of Lolthiriel. They are produced in large quantities by the students of the incantors colleges and by the priests of the city. They are basically the power that Lolthiriel and our faith in her grant us in liquid form.

Common Ingredients

Amara’s Dream

Is a ground hugging plant that produces small purple flowers. It is named after the renowned alchemist Amara Belthiir, who first discovered its fortifying properties. It is frequently found in sunny patches of stony ground.

Bourgas’ Whisker

Is a thin leaved herb that is found in large quantities in and around Duanrahel. It is frequently used to season food and has some medicinal properties that are exploited in many potions.

Citric Acid

Is obtained from the juices of citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes. It is an essential component of any potion to purge the body of ill, because of its stabilising properties.

Grave Dust

Is a misnomer. It is nothing to do with the remains of those who have fallen, but has been given its name, because it is a moss that grows in dark, damp and decaying places.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus berries are the red fruit of a shrub that is found predominantly in the warmer lands to the South of Duanrahel. The berries are common included in potions for resisting and curing poisons, as well as occasionally in more general healing brews.

Hydrochloric Acid

Is a basic chemical that can be obtained from most traders in the city. In potions it acts as a reagent binding the other ingredients together.

Nettle

Is a stinging green leaved plant, which, when correctly prepared can create recuperative effects. It is frequently found in wild and untamed parts of urban areas and in banks of dense vegetation surrounding woodland.

Potash

Can be easily made by soaking the ash from wood fires in iron pans and evaporating the mixture to leave a white residue. It is known for its properties in resisting disease.

Shiitake Mushrooms

Come from the lands far to the east and can only be obtained from those traders who venture the furthest. They are used in potions that boost resistance.

Slyvan Sage

A herb that comes from the lands of the south, which is known for its ability to improve the mental clarity and focus of the imbiber.

Sulphur

Is a pungent yellow powder, found in and around areas of volcanic activity. It is most frequently used in those potions intended to cause the drinker harm.

Willow Bark

Is harvested from willow trees, which are usually, but not always found close to sources of water. The bark is a common ingredient of healing potions.

Valerian Root

Is the root of a common green leaved plant found in and around Duanrahel. It is used in potions intended to dull the mind and induce sleep.

Long Duration Restorative Elixir

This potion restores health and vitality gradually to the drinker over the period of 1 day and night. It is ideal for use by warriors, who expect to be involved in prolonged engagements, where they might expect to suffer a number of minor wounds. It should be not be given to those, who have suffered major wounds, as it’s healing effects are unlikely to be sufficient in both quantity and speed to save anyone badly injured.
