A Discourse on Daemonology

Professor Dimitri Von Trugelhof The Faculty of Daemonology at the University of Teutonia
Compiled and Produced by the Faculty Librarian At the Triests Campus Scriptoium

Daemons come from the Plane of Dark Spirits.

Humans and other denizens of Erdreja come from the Plane of Life. Once born, they forget any past lives, and the Mind is the sentient part of the being. Once dead, the pattern returns to the Plane of Life and can be contacted briefly via 'speak with Dead' before it returns to Erdreja on the cycle of Life. Patterns travel on a linear line between the Plane of Life, the Plane of the Living (Erdreja), the Plane of Unlife and the Plane of the Ancestors depending on their origin and any relevant actions here on the Plane of the Living. See The Art Of Channelling by Frantica Karrash-Morr for more details on this subject.

Daemons are spirits, and the spirit takes the place of the pattern. The spirit is the sentient part of the Daemon, and when a daemon's body is destroyed here on the Plane of the Living the spirit returns to the Plane of Dark Spirits. When it returns it remembers the whole of it’s past and history.

There are only three known ways for a Daemon to enter the Plane of the Living:
1) To enter through a Daemonic Portal. These are extremely rare, and the only known one by this scholar is the one in Liost.
2) To be summoned from the Plane of Dark Spirits within a Ritual Circle and given form.
3) To possess a denizen of Erdreja and take over the body. This results in the body slowly transforming to take on the form and shape of the Daemons Spirit within.

Ceremonies have been researched by the Faculty to see if temporary enhancements can be attained without full possession and thus endangering the life of the Volunteer.

The attached notes contain excerpts from the Faculty Journal with regards to one of the more successful experiments in the exciting new field of Daemonology.

An excerpt from the Laboratory Journal of the Faculty:

Interesting. Today an unfortunate accident led to a most favourable outcome. One of the Apprentices had spilt the potions for Experiment 53 all over himself and the table during a clumsy incident involving the remains of Experiment 52. Viktor was incensed, and without thought drew his dagger and yelled obscenities at the fool before plunging the dagger into the Apprentice’s chest up to the hilt.

At this point, a Higari Daemon appeared in the Research Area through the Daemonic Portal. We clumsily sped through the proper observance of Charms to protect ourselves and partially Bind the Daemon to the Prime Fetish and to render it immobile.

Luckily for us, the Higara Daemon was pleased with our summoning, and further requested to be released on the promise that it would do us no harm. After we had finished laughing, we released the Daemon from immobility, yet left it bound to the Prime Fetish.

After much flattering (Higara Daemons are not known for their intellectual supremacy) we learned the following about the Daemon:

Name: K’Zulyntbo

Type: Higara Daemon

Powers: Immensely tough with the capacity to take much damage The strength to crush opponent's shields and armour Immunity to mind affecting spells (due to it's lack of cognisant thought)

Weakness: Incredibly stupid; usually follows orders from Daemon Princes without question. Easily outsmarted during conversation. (This is common to all Higara Daemons, but was evident all the same)

By chance Viktor had said the words “Arkiuk” at the same time as bloodying the dagger blade. This was pleasing to K’Zulyntbo. He further told us of his prowess in battle, in some detail I might add. A few of the Apprentices ran away and one fainted. We banished K’Zulyntbo back to the Plane of Dark Spirits to await our call; and began work on experiment 56 immediately.

Experiment 56

Due to the cost of training new Apprentices, a potion was eventually produced to substitute blood on the dagger blade. K’Zulyntbo was sated and the Apprentice rebellion was quashed. [nb. we require new tables in the dining area].
We called up K’Zulyntbo once more, and used the dagger as his Fetish. Once bound to the item, we began 'negotiations' with the Daemon. After some discussions we received knowledge of the necessary sigils to bind the Daemon to one of the Apprentices.

The first time was messy, and nearly sparked off the Revolt again. However, we made the next Apprentice drink some of the potion before the possession, and they lives through the experience with only some discomfort. However, for 12 hours they did nothing but dribble and mumble incoherently, rocking back and forth. They were much stronger but no use to anyone.

The next time, we spoke to K’Zulyntbo further, and refined the sigils, placing one on the forehead of the Apprentice to protect their mind. This seemed to work much better, and tests were carried out satisfactorily. Although the thought processes were slowed; the Volunteer Apprentice was able to take more pain and damage than normal before incapacitation. K’Zulyntbo has produced the best results so far than any other experiment in Daemonology, and has given us the results we require just before our grant runs out.

Ceremony of Summoning and Binding K’Zulyntbo

Call upon K’Zulyntbo, praise him as an Higara Daemon of great prowess. Speak of the death and destruction that he has caused in his existence, and ask that his Spirit join us. Expel magical energy into the Dagger Fetish and pour the Potion onto the Blade whilst chanting “Arkeuk”. K’Zulyntbo will then be drawn into the Fetish.

The Volunteer should then drink the remainder of the Potion before the Binding Sigils are placed on his left arm, forehead; right cheek and chin.

K’Zulyntbo should then be forced from the Dagger Fetish into the Volunteer, and the Binding Ceremony should be performed by the Fetish wielder.

The Binding Ceremony involves placating the Daemon Spirit by speaking of it’s strengths and pain threshold. These qualities should be spoken of loudly and clearly so that the Spirit knows to bring these energies to the fore. Then subjugate the Daemon's will to that of the Volunteer. The expenditure of magical energies is helpful at this stage.

When the Volunteer can speak the possession is compete. The Volunteer is usually a bit groggy and incoherent for the first five minutes or so and is quick to anger and retaliation. However, for twelve hours they can take more pain and damage than usual due to K’Zulyntbo’s Spirit within.

Potion Recipe for Experiment 56:

Ingredients:
2 measures of Daemon Bile
3 Hazelberries
eye of newt
1 spoon of honey
1 lump of coal
2 drops of Yarris Dew
red silk handkerchief

Preparation
Crush Hazelberries and mix in 1 drop of Yarris Dew. Leave in a covered container for 3 hours.
Crush lump of coal into fine powder. Add to the Hazelberry mixture and pour in the Daemon Bile. Mix until the consistency of paste is achieved.
Pierce the lens of the newt eye, and put a drop of Yarris Dew into the eye. Drop the eye into the paste and simmer over the warm ashes of a fire for six hours with a red silk handkerchief over the container.
After six hours, take hold of the handkerchief and turn the container upside down over a bowl. The paste will be caught in the handkerchief, and a sticky pungent liquid will seep through the silk into the bowl.
Add to this liquid a spoon of honey for taste and leave in a cool dark face for 3 days before consumption.

The paste should be stored in an airtight cask in a dark cellar for a week, after which it can be used instead of peat in many recipes to the ratio 1 pound of peat to 1 spoon of paste.
