The Creation of Circles

by Cullen Lochan

As you will probably know, Ritual Circles mark a point where the pattern of our world and the 'threads' of the elements almost meet. This bridge may be naturally occurring, or formed by intent, or accident, through worship or art in a place over time. Through this bridge power may be channelled, or drawn. People and creatures may also use the bridge to travel between places, or even realms over distances which would normally seem impossible.

To the skilled the Ritual Circle is a place of great importance. All the greater works are learnt here, and enacted. To those whose skill is lacking, or to the bumbling fool, they can be a place of great danger. If one were to accidentally invoke a power inside the Circle, the consequences would probably be dire.
And so it is said that when the first Circles of Power arose upon the lands the Dagda, Lord of The Sun, called to Yr Ddraig, the Great Earth Dragon, to surround these places with His protection. Yr Ddraig called up His most trusted warriors, who stood guard around them, sworn not to fail. Lugh Light Hand, Lord of Air, placed between them His great spears, to aid their defence. They stood proud, and looked skyward to Danu, Lady of The Moon And Seas, who rained Her power upon them. And so the stones were formed...

Dagda instructed His followers to care for the guardians of the circles, to ensure that they were honoured in return for their devoted service.

No man is permitted to harm the stones, or defile the circle. No weapon should be drawn within the circle. No blood should be spilt.

Because of the possibility that unsolicited attentions may arrive through the circle, it should be guarded at all times, without fail. It is rare, but the power of the circles varies with time, likewise the gap between our realm and others. It has been the case that creatures have appeared in them, who have the ability to travel as mages and their like do. It is wise to be guarded against such threats. Similarly enemies might use ritual transport to deposit a force within your midst.
